At the end of a wire and cable line, the take-up winds the finished product onto a bobbin or drum. Two designs do that job in different ways — the pillar-type and the A-type — and choosing between them comes down to the reel you need to fill.
What a take-up does
A take-up winds finished cable onto reels under controlled tension, with a traverse mechanism laying each turn evenly across the reel. Done well, the result is a tight, uniform reel that holds its shape and unwinds cleanly at the next stage. Done poorly, you get crushed layers, gaps, or cable that tangles on pay-off.
Pillar-type take-up
In a pillar-type take-up, the reel is carried on a column-style stand and loaded from one side. It has a compact footprint, handles a useful range of bobbin sizes, and supports high-speed winding — which makes it a strong choice where floor space is limited and reel sizes are light to medium.
A-type (portal) take-up
An A-type take-up carries the reel between two A-shaped frames, supported on both sides like a portal. That dual support gives the stability needed for heavier drums and larger cable, so it is the natural choice for high-load winding of big reels.

Rule of thumb: match the take-up to the heaviest reel you will run. Pillar-type for compact, higher-speed winding of moderate reels; A-type when the drums get large and heavy.
Tension and traverse matter more than the frame
Whichever frame you pick, winding quality comes from the controls, not the shape of the stand:
- Constant tension — the system must hold the same tension as the reel diameter grows, using a dancer or servo control, so early and late layers wind the same.
- Traverse (lay) control — even, repeatable layering across the reel width prevents ridging and crossovers.
- Smooth start and stop — so speed changes never snatch the cable.
A take-up with a great frame but poor tension control will still produce bad reels — which is why these are the specifications to scrutinise.
It works hand-in-hand with the haul-off
The take-up has to accept cable at exactly the pace the haul-off delivers it, absorbing small speed differences through a dancer or accumulator. Take-up and haul-off are a matched pair, and they should be specified together with the rest of the line.
